HMD Fusion Highlights
The HMD Fusion, unveiled in September 2024, is aimed at users looking for custom functionality and repairability. Priced from KSh 35,500, it stands out as a mid range offering with a few interesting features that might catch the attention of those who value a longer lasting device.
Display and Design
The phone sports a 6.56 inch IPS LCD screen with a 90Hz refresh rate. Though the 720 x 1612 pixel resolution isn’t the sharpest at this price point, the display offers decent brightness with 600 nits, which is good enough for everyday use in most lighting conditions. The IP54 dust and splash resistance is a nice inclusion, providing a bit of safety for the occasional mishap.
Camera Performance
In terms of cameras, the HMD Fusion has a 108MP dual main camera setup and a 50MP front camera for selfies. The higher resolution of these cameras is promising, especially for those who enjoy mobile photography. However, actual image quality will depend on how well the software handles photos in various conditions, especially low light.
Battery and Charging
With a 5000mAh battery and 33W fast charging, the phone should easily last a full day for most users. The charging speed is decent at this price point, and is a practical feature for those who need quick top-ups during the day.
Repairability and Upgrades
One of the most unique aspects of the HMD Fusion is its “repair-it-yourself” capability. This feature is supported by the HMD Fusion toolkit, allowing users to perform basic repairs themselves. For people interested in extending the lifespan of their phones, this could be a major draw. The phone also comes with support for add-on accessories through the same toolkit. Additionally, the device promises up to 2 major Android updates and 3 years of security patches, offering some future-proofing.
Storage and Expandability
Another benefit is the inclusion of microSD card support, allowing storage expansion of up to 1TB. This is especially useful for users who need extra space for media, apps, and files.
The HMD Fusion offers a good range of features, but its biggest appeal might lie in its repairability and ability for add-on accessories.
